Switzerland Lakes & Mountains Loop

Switzerland represents the pinnacle of European motorhome touring—and the pinnacle of European prices. Yet the investment rewards: infrastructure that sets global standards, landscapes of almost excessive drama, and mountain roads that rank among the world’s finest. This route connects the country’s most spectacular regions through a logical circuit.

Begin at Lake Geneva, where Montreux’s microclimate allows palm trees and Château de Chillon’s island fortress evokes medieval romance. The Golden Pass route climbs through Gruyères—yes, the cheese—to the Bernese Oberland, where the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks create one of the Alps’ most recognisable skylines. Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen provide bases for mountain railway excursions, while Interlaken offers more conventional lakeside relaxation.

Continue east through Lucerne, whose Chapel Bridge and mountain-ringed lake create Switzerland’s most photographed urban scene, to the Engadin valley and St. Moritz—glamorous, certainly, but surrounding landscapes of genuine grandeur. The Bernina Pass, descending into Italian-speaking Ticino, ranks among Europe’s most spectacular mountain crossings, while Lake Lugano provides Mediterranean atmosphere despite Alpine surroundings.

Swiss motorhome facilities are excellent but expensive—expect to pay significantly more than in neighbouring countries. The road network, including many dramatic passes, generally accommodates campervans, though some routes restrict larger vehicles. Summer offers the longest access season, though spring and autumn provide quieter conditions. Budget a minimum of one week; two allows proper appreciation. The investment, most travellers conclude, proves worthwhile.
