Côte d’Azur & Provence Trail

The French Mediterranean coast, from Marseille to Monaco, has drawn travellers for over a century, its combination of climate, culture, and glamour creating one of Europe’s most seductive destinations. For motorhome travellers, the challenge lies in escaping the obvious—and this route balances the famous coastline with the equally rewarding Provençal hinterland.

The coast itself remains irresistible. Nice, with its Promenade des Anglais and exceptional art museums, provides cultural anchor. Saint-Tropez, despite the yachts and celebrities, retains genuine fishing-village character in its early mornings. Antibes, Cannes, Menton—each offers distinct personality. The corniche roads connecting these resorts, carved into cliffs above the Mediterranean, rank among Europe’s finest driving experiences.

Yet Provence, behind the coast, rewards motorhome exploration more richly. The lavender fields around Valensole—spectacular in June and July—have become Instagram famous, but quieter villages reveal more authentic character. Gordes and Roussillon, built from ochre-coloured stone, represent the ‘perched village’ genre at its finest. The Luberon regional park offers cycling and walking through landscapes that inspired Cézanne, van Gogh, and Peter Mayle.

Coastal motorhome travel in summer requires planning—restrictions apply in many resorts, and prices rise considerably. The interior offers easier access year-round, with excellent ‘aires’ throughout the region. Spring and early summer suit the flowers and lavender; autumn delivers harvest atmosphere and truffle season. A week allows balanced coastal and interior exploration; two weeks permit the leisurely pace this region genuinely deserves.
