Wild Swimming and Sauna Culture

Swedes swim in cold water for fun, because the sauna follows. Hot, cold, hot, cold, repeat until euphoric. Every Swedish city has swimmable water. Stockholm has dozens of bathing spots; Gothenburg has the archipelago. Saunas complete the experience: try Hellasgården (lakeside, traditional) or Centralbadet (historic spa) in Stockholm, or Frihamnen in Gothenburg where you jump directly into the harbour. Winter swimming intensifies everything — holes cut in frozen lakes, the particular high of cold-water immersion, the non-negotiable sauna afterwards. Etiquette: nudity is standard and expected (swimsuits are for pools).
