The Grand Prix Weekend
Formula One through the streets of Monaco
The Monaco Grand Prix is the only Formula One race run on public streets through a functioning city. For one weekend in late May, the harbour becomes a paddock, the Casino square becomes a chicane, and the tunnel beneath the Fairmont Hotel becomes the fastest stretch of asphalt in racing. The event defines Monaco’s year, and attending it properly requires both planning and resources.
The best views come from the hotels and apartments that overlook the circuit. The Hôtel de Paris offers hospitality suites with views of the Casino corner; the Fairmont Monte-Carlo has balconies above the famous hairpin; the apartments along the harbour command six-figure rental prices for the weekend. These locations provide comfort, catering, and the ability to watch racing without the crowds below.
Yacht hospitality offers an alternative perspective. Boats moored in the harbour provide floating platforms for corporate entertainment, with views of the swimming pool section and the tunnel entrance. Charter prices during the Grand Prix weekend reflect the scarcity — expect €150,000 and upward for a suitable vessel with berth, crew, and catering.
The social events around the race — the parties, the dinners, the gatherings on boats and terraces — rival the racing itself for importance. The Amber Lounge, the official after-party, brings together drivers, celebrities, and those who’ve paid substantially for access. The networking opportunities alone justify attendance for many.
